Posavje: The Land of Hills, Castles, and Cviček

The Region: Located in the southeast along the Sava River, Posavje is Slovenia’s smallest wine region by production but one of its most historically unique. The landscape is a gentle tapestry of rolling hills, dotted with castles and small, family-owned vineyard cottages (zidanice). The climate is milder than Podravje, and the region is known for producing both red and white wines, though it is most famous for a local specialty that is the heart and soul of the region's identity.

Sub-Regions of Posavje:

Dolenjska: This is the heartland of Cviček, a wine that is uniquely Slovenian. Cviček is a protected wine of designated origin, made from a blend of red and white grapes (predominantly Žametovka and Kraljevina). The result is a pale red, exceptionally dry wine with very high acidity and a low alcohol content (typically 8.5-10%). It is not a wine meant for contemplation, but for joyful drinking—a crisp, tart, and incredibly refreshing wine that is a beloved local tradition.

Bizeljsko-Sremič: This area is best known for its red wines, particularly Blaufränkisch (Modra Frankinja), which produces spicy, elegant reds with bright cherry flavors. The region is also famous for its unique repnice—historic cellars dug directly into the area's silica sand soil, used for generations to store wine.

Bela Krajina: Meaning "White Carniola," this is the warmest sub-region in Posavje. It is known for producing quality red wines and some excellent aromatic whites, particularly Yellow Muscat.

From the bold, sun-kissed wines of the west to the crisp, aromatic gems of the east, Slovenia offers a world of discovery in every glass. We invite you to explore our portfolio and taste the remarkable diversity of this incredible winemaking nation.
