For our founder, Anton Usaj, the story of Chief Imports is the story of coming home. As a first-generation American, he was raised on stories of Slovenia—a land of breathtaking beauty, resilient people, and deep-rooted traditions. In 2016, he embarked on a journey to connect with that heritage, to walk the soil of his ancestors and meet the family he had known only through photographs and letters.

He went seeking his roots, but he found a legacy.

In the rolling hills of the Slovenian countryside, Anton learned that the Usaj family history was written in vines. For generations, his relatives had been winemakers, cultivating the same land and honoring the native grapes that are the lifeblood of the region. They weren't just farmers; they were custodians of a culture, their passion and history poured into every bottle.

The Moment Everything Changed

The true discovery, however, came at the family table. Amidst the warmth of reunion, the laughter, and the sharing of stories, a bottle of family-made wine was opened. In that setting of profound love and connection, the wine was more than just a beverage. It was a catalyst.

With each sip of the amazing, soulful wine, the moment was amplified. The flavors told a story of the soil, the sun, and the hands that tended the vines. But more importantly, the wine itself seemed to deepen the bonds in the room, turning a simple gathering into a cherished memory. It was in that instant that a mission was born: to share not just the exceptional wines of Slovenia, but the powerful feeling of connection they inspire.
