Podravje: The Cool, Continental North-East

The Region: Named for the Drava River that flows through it, Podravje is located in the northeast, bordering Austria and Hungary. The climate here is continental, with cold winters and warm summers, heavily influenced by the cool air from the nearby Alps. This is Slovenia’s largest wine region and is overwhelmingly dedicated to white wine production. The style is completely different from Primorska; here, the wines are celebrated for their vibrant aromatics, high acidity, and elegant, fresh character. Podravje is also a historic center for high-quality sparkling wines and world-class aromatic varietals.

Sub-Regions of Podravje:

Štajerska Slovenija: This is the heart of Podravje, a landscape of steep, terraced vineyards that are among the most challenging to farm in the world. The cool climate and mineral-rich soils are perfect for aromatic white grapes. It is renowned for its world-class Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, which are prized for their piercing acidity and complex aromatics. Local specialties like Šipon (Furmint) and Laški Rizling (Welschriesling) also produce exceptional, mineral-driven wines here.

Prekmurje: Located further east and bordering Hungary, Prekmurje is slightly warmer and flatter than Štajerska. The wines here tend to be a bit richer and fuller-bodied. It is known for excellent Chardonnay and Laški Rizling, and is also a region where you can find Blaufränkisch and other red varieties.
