Laški Rizling (Welschriesling)
Primary Region(s): Podravje (especially Štajerska) and Posavje.
The Grape & Its Cultivation: Not to be confused with Rhine Riesling, Laški Rizling is a widely planted grape in Central Europe. In Slovenia, it excels in the cool climate and marl soils of the eastern regions, where meticulous farming can yield high-quality grapes with excellent acidity.
Winemaking & Styles: It is incredibly versatile. It can be made into simple, fresh, dry whites, high-quality traditional method sparkling wines, and, when affected by noble rot, lusciously sweet dessert wines (Trockenbeerenauslese).
Tasting Profile: In its dry form, it presents crisp green apple, citrus, and a characteristic, pleasant note of bitter almond on the finish. Its high acidity makes it incredibly refreshing.
